    63 hood wedges

in the process of restoring a late 63, vin 19299 and its plastic wedges bolted to the hood frame are light tan in color. this old 63 was missing one of its blocks that bolt to the top surround gutter/bonding strip so i went to the barn to retrieve 63 hood wedge parts . in the bag were a pair of BLACK plastic wedges that have the identical morphology of their light tan brothers. anybody seen black wedges. ithe only 63 i can think of that the BLACK pair came off of was a dec 63 coupe or a march 63 that i got rid of years ago. thanks for the help, mike

Mike, I don't recall ever seeing a black hood wedge, My March 63 has a off white color, I guess they could be a tan as they age.

yeah ed, i wouldn't be surprised if the tan or yellow wedges started out life as bone white, then as they aged, they darkened somewhat. mike

The hunched-over graybearded guy with the limp that is in charge of my memory bank seems to recall a repo attempt that showed up in black.
If you're in a bind, I have a set of four of the off-whites and the bottoms, no bolts and no glass reinforcements.

thanks for the offer loren, but i have 2 extra tan ones and the pair of black ones. got three of the pot metal blocks and a pair of the fiberglass reinforcements. will take all the spare hood related stuff to carlisle in august as this is the last 63 i have to do. these black ones have the identical depressions on their unexposed sides just like the original tan ones. i may just use the black ones the first time the augusta midget judges the car. love to pull his chain. mike

Mike - surprised 19299 had wedges, as my Duntov 19367 did NOT have any wedges

              Mike,

Early cars had black plastic wedges. As I recall my #8700 had black wedges to the rear and the fronts were filled with bonding adhesive. There were several combinations with two wedges and four wedges. It's all in the judging manual.

                # of wedges is well covered in the JM but no mention of black wedges in current JM. looking at these black ones and comparing their configuration to original tan/white ones, i conclude black ones were used. thanks, mike

Joe, Can't find mention of black wedges. 6th Edition. Page 50. Hood Wedges. Only specifies off-white?
On the other hand I remember seeing a 63 long ago with black jobs and was wondering what was going on? My
19400 plus car I used own had zero hood wedges. My 63, the LWC in 9900 range has four off-white wedges.
See you in Carlisle soon. John
