    54/58 Gas Gauges

    Hi... As of recently both my gas gauges with full tank read only 1/2. As tank empties gauges will drop normally. Is it easiest to check gauges first? (what is exact procedure) or mess with the sending unit(procedure again) have checked all grounds and they are clean and tight. Did I miss anything? Thank's guy's. Brad.

    Brad,

    To test the gauge in the cluster, you need a variable resistor, 0 to 30 ohms. Disconnect the sender wire and connect your resistor between the sender terminal on the gauge and ground. Vary the resistor and watch the gauge.

    To test the sender, you'll need a ohm meter to read all positions, but you'll need to remove the sender to test it by moving the float. But in your case if the tank is full, you could remove the sender wire and connect your meter between the sender terminal and ground to test for "full"(~30 ohms).

    Full= ~30 ohms

    Empty = ~0 ohms

        Brad -

        Try the article below to diagnose the C1 fuel gauges.

          Hi guy's... gauge's seem to check out fine. I took the sender out and noticed right off that the float at the same line where it snaps into bar has a 1/2 crack in it and it had a lot of gas in it. Have not checked anything else out yet. Could this be the problem and should I check the unit out? Thank's, Brad.

            Brad, I'd do the electrical test of the unit and if it's good you can replace just the float.
