Will the regulator click when hooking the red battery wire to back off alternator- Normal or not??

With engine not running, doesn't sound normal. I would guess the batt would drain.

Just thought of something. With the ignition on I believe it energizes the field. Could your key be on?

Dom, I believe the problem is in the alternator, I took apart to replace diodes with dated ones and fresh up Must have something grounded internally. I will take apart and recheck to find out why

I will never hear it because I would not hook up that red wire with the battery connected...
