    65 4 speed rear seal

I took my 65 on a 400 mile trip this weekend and this morning there was a pool of transmission gear oil on the floor. I put the car on the lift and discovered the rear transmission seal had popped out. It is easy enough to replace the seal but it seems there may be an underlying problem that caused the seal to pop out. There is no vibrations like a bad ujoint or noises like a transmission bearing going out. The seal has been in for 17 years and has about 6500 miles on it. Anybody have some thoughts on what may have caused this?

Worn tailshaft bushing? Might want to check for up/down play in yoke to tailshaft fit, if its OK put in a new seal and see what happens.

Stewart - I'd be thinking along the same lines as Doug on this, that the tailshaft bushing was worn an allowed the yoke to move around which caused the rear seal to pop free. You mention the trans having 6500 miles on it in 17 years so it sounds like the trans was rebuilt back around '98, any idea if the rear bushing was also replaced?

The slip yoke will ware before the bearing. If yoke has no groves , u may just have an old seal that popped out. With drive shaft and seal off , is yoke tight on output shaft? Need to drop tranny to change bearing

Nope, not if you have the tool to remove it (bushing, not bearing) with the transmission in the car - all you have to remove is the driveshaft.

You can remove it , I have the tool, but unless you bang the bearing into receiver , you can not press it into position, I had to take out tranny to have it pressed into tailshaft

It's possible the root cause is a worn bushing as others have suggested and that's definitely worth checking. However, my guess is that the seal popped out because it was not properly installed in the first place.
