Re: 65 first paint
Bill - I didn't think there was any of that stuff left around. I had a spare quart of Dupont 99S Black Diamond that I had on the shelf for about 20 years and needed to recoat the hood and roof a few years ago and surprisingly it was still good after all that time. Of course, up until recently, I lived in California and the old Lacquer stopped being available quite a few years ago.Last edited by Mike T.; June 6, 2015, 08:20 PM.Mike T. - Prescott AZ.- Top

Re: 65 first paint
Mike I bought 3 gallons about 7 years are so ago . I worked in a Chevy dealer body shop and our supplier bought all the lacquer mixing supplies he could get . He no longer has any left . I waited as long as could to buy mine I was afraid it would go bad . It was fine when I opened it today it was stored in a dry basement .- Top

Re: 65 first paint
Bill - Smart move to stockpile the paint while it was still available. I painted my 65 with Black Dupont Lacquer in the late 80's and luckily had an unused quart left over which came in handy back about 5 years ago. The problem was we needed more so we tried to see how the BC/CC would match the old lacquer and no dice but we found the single stage urethane was close enough.Mike T. - Prescott AZ.- Top

Re: 65 first paint
Bob the thinning ratio depends on the color and how good it covers . Most lacquers I thin about 150% or about a quart of color to about a 1 1/2 quarts of thinner . How many coats depends on how well it covers usually 3 to 5 cover coats . Yellow is the worst to cover ,Black is the best .- Top

Re: 65 first paint
Looking good Bill !! I envy your skill to tackle a metallic lacquer job without a clear coat. I suspect it will darken some with a few more coats and time for it to flash off all the thinner. I found that temperature and humidity were crucial factors when painting mine last year. Looks like our paint booths have a lot in-common though.
Good Luck with the rest of the job!
