Heres a quick update on the 65 project . The doors and body are now sealed . Getting close to paint . I can tell when I am making progress by the amount of empty Long Island bags I throw away .DSC_1787.jpgDSC_1791.jpgDSC_1789.jpgDSC_1784.jpg

Re: 396 project progress
Hi Tom I put both rear quarter panels and a complete front end . All fiberglass panels and bonding strips were GM that I bought in the early 80s . It was last driven or licence'd in 1973 . I had other projects before thats why it took so long to start on it . Now I'm retired and have lots of time .- Top

Re: 396 project progress
I retired years ago and find that I have less time for my projects than when I was working. Regardless, your car looks great. I finished a body off restoration on my 65 coupe a few years ago. I have my eyes on a 65 BB roadster that's been sitting for at least 20 years in a heated garage. Post some pics. when you get color on your car.- Top

Re: 396 project progress
Looks great Bill!! If you have a few picture of the door jams prior to paint I'd love to see them. The ones you posted earlier when they were virgin are very informative. Do you think you will you put the doors back on prior to paint like St. Louis did?
I can't wait to get going back on mine. The last couple summers I let things go around the house and spend most of the spring catching up on that.

Re: 396 project progress
Mike I am not painting the inside of the door shells or the underside of the rear deck lid .I am leaving them crude as built by GM . I am also not replacing the door or the rear deck weatherstrips even though they have cracks I like the original yellow /brown weatherstrip glue . I am painting the jambs on the body due to the front end and quarter panel replacement . I am not painting the hinges or hinge pockets .
The way I paint the old cars is I give the main body and all the body parts 3 or 4 coats to get everything covered then assemble the doors , headlamps and rear deck . (I paint the hood off the car). Then when everything is fitting I sand it with 1000 wet and put the last coats on . I am painting with Dupont lacquer and NO clear . I have left all the factory waves in the body . It was not gel coated and block sanded to make it straight . Good luck on your car maybe we will get done about the same time .Last edited by Bill W.; June 5, 2015, 12:11 AM.- Top

Re: 396 project progress
When I went back to the original Glen Green in mine 36 years ago the car had already been repainted 4 times. I found the original Glen Green, Brown, Gold and Dark Blue. The first 12 years of the old girls life were petty rough.
I think you will probably finish before I do. When I was younger I had a bad habit jumping around doing different tasks when working on a project. Now I try to stay focused to the point of being obsessive about it. I don't want to touch the body before the chassis is finished.
The lower half of my lowly L76 is mostly assembled. I just have to find a local machine shop to do the heads. Most of the local shops around here want to install hardened seats. When I hear that I just move on to the next guy.

Re: 396 project progress
Thanks!...That is really looking nice I love the look of fresh lacquer. Couple questions if you don't mind?
You're painting in your garage I assume?
What are you using for ventilation?
Are you using an HPLV gun, and if so do you know what size tip?
How much pressure at the gun?
What reducer/thinner are you using?
What's temperature and approximate humidity are you shooting the paint at?
Here's a shot of my '65 Coupe the day I removed the body from the chassis, I painted it shortly after I got in my folks garage when I was 20 some 38 years ago. I have a ton of other pictures, I'll start a thread sometime similar to what Rich has done.

Re: 396 project progress
Mike pulling a body at 20 years old was quite a job .
Yes I paint in my garage . for ventilation I just open the doors on both ends and turn on a fan when I am done painting . With lacquer , overspray just falls on the floor and is swept up later . From my days as a painter I have a couple of gravity feed HVLP guns both Devilbiss I think they have # 10 heads . I now use one of them for primer and the Imron I put on the frame & susp. I have 3 good Devilbiss siphon feed non HVLPs and one Binks . I also have 4 Astro cheepo guns that I used for primer & sealer . Pressure I dont know I go by sound ,feel and how the paint is laying down ,probably about 35 to 40 lbs . HVLP gun about 45 at the tip. I used 3661 thinner when I put the final paint on I will use a combo of 3661 & 3602 . (med. & slow dry )Ideal temp 70 to 80 . Humidity the lower the better . In the St Louis summers its 60 to 70% If its to high you get blushing or bubbles thats not good . This paint was put on as a base or cover coat , I did not try to make it to slick . When I put the final paint on I will make an attempt to clean the garage first.- Top
