I was watching a show on TV about the Firebird Trans Am. The narrator claimed the 73 and 74 SD Trans Am was the fastest production for that era. Just wondered how the 454 Corvette of 73 and 74 stacked up against the Pontiac. Were any road tests done with these two cars in mind?

Re: Trans Am vs 454 Corvette
Walter....I don't know about speed say the quarter mile, but I do think the price resale is stronger with the Trans Am and especially the '74 which I believe was the last of the "SD" 455s.Peter Gregory # 4157

Re: Trans Am vs 454 Corvette
Walter,
i have owned a 73 SD 455 Trans Am and a 73 454 Corvette, both stock. There was no comparison as that SD 455 was a really special engine. They only built 252 in 73 and around 700 in 74. As I recall contemporary car magazines back in the day reported high 13 second quarter mile times for the T/A and high 14 seconds for the Corvette.- Top

Re: Trans Am vs 454 Corvette
I don't have the HP numbers in front of me but I know the 73-74 TA 454HO was far stronger than the 275HP of the corvette LS4 engine.
Ps Looks like I was confusing the HO with the SD. The SD had 315 HP so the base 454HO would have had less than 315. That would put the HO closer to the LS4 in the corvette.- Top

Re: Trans Am vs 454 Corvette
The SD 455 was a beast. I worked as a Tech at a Chicagoland Pontiac dealer at the time. Dealership owner claimed he had more SD than anybody. Can remember about 20 on the lot in 74 in mixes of auto and 4spd. That motor had power and torque. We had one trade in a 74 Formula SD it had shaker hood and no wheel spoilers. The factory rep bought the trade in being it was rare.- Top

Re: Trans Am vs 454 Corvette
When I was 16 the local Pontiac dealer had a Brewster Green 1973 SD 455 Formula, it too had a shaker hood and black vinyl top. Man did I want that car. Good thing I couldn't afford it, I'm sure I would be dead now if I could have.
