    65 4 speed

I searched the archives for an answer but couldn't find one. Anyone know how many different 4 speed transmissions were offered in a 65 with the 300 327 ? Close or wide ratio ? Muncie vs Borg warner ?

    Re: 65 4 speed

    John,
I believe three manual transmissions were available in 1965. The "standard equipment" transmission was a 3 speed manual. Optional 4 speeds included the Muncie M20 and Muncie M22. I don't believe the M22 was available with the 327/300, only the M20. The M22 was designed for racing / competition, very few M22s were sold - they were straighter cut gears and this trans was referred to as "the rock crusher". You could also get a 2 speed powerglide with the 300 HP engine.

All 1965 4 speed transmissions were of the Muncie variety. No Borg Warner T-10's, at all.

The M-20 Muncie transmission was available in both wide and close ratio. Which one you got was determined by the engine option. The 250 and 300 horsepower engines equipped with a 4 speed were wide ratio only. All other available engines received the close ratio.

Joe stated it well. In 1965, the SHP motors got a close ratio M-20 (which in 1966 was called the M-21)

And of those 8482 Muncie wide ratio 4-speeds, 7000 were installed behind L75 (300hp) engines; the balance on the base 250 hp engine.

Now if you want to spark some controversy ask the question was the speedo output on the driver or passenger side the whole model year?

Ha, I did see a post recently about that and if I remember correctly, some were pass side and some were driver side.

                  Re: 65 4 speed

Thanks everyone. I'll see if I can locate a casting number. I'm trying to check casting numbers and dates throughout the car to see what's right and what's wrong. It's an un restored car ( except for paint and soft top ) and it appears so far that the only things that I'll need to change are the carb and the alternator. The distributor actually still has the ID band, of all things , I surely didn't expect that to still be there.
                  Thanks again !

                    John -

Nope. All '65 4-speeds used the 584 tailhousing with the speedo drive on the passenger side. The note in the Colvin book is incorrect. The 3-speed and Powerglide had the speedo drive on the driver's side.
