65' Telescopic Steering clearance

Funny how we forget how things were set up - before we took them apart.......
We took apart my telescopic steering wheel at the front end (horn button and twist knob), and removed the steering wheel in order to adjust the steering wheel, and also to repair the horn button contact. When we put it all back together, I found the distance of the tele twist knob to be too far from the steering wheel. It presently has a 1/4" gap as shown in the attached photos. Is this correct ? Prefer not to have to take it apart again.........

The gap on my 66 tele isn't more than an 1/8 inch.
