    58-62 Wiper Transmissions

I have newly rebuilt wiper transmissions that I attempted to install this morning. While releasing the cables in order to gain additional length to install them to the drum, I somehow pulled one of the cables off the wheel and jammed it in the housing.

I've determined that the only way I'm going to get it into its proper place is to take the transmission apart. One problem-I have no idea as to how to get it apart.

    Help!

      Jim:

Thanks so much for taking the time to post the rebuild procedure. Now the only thing I need to do is decide whether I want to really screw it up, or send it back to the rebuilder.

Those transmissions are supposed to have a couple of tabs on the very bottom that keep the pulleys from extending too far when the shaft is depressed. More often than not one or more of those are broken off and the cable is prone to come off during installation. Your rebuilder should have addressed this. See red arrows in the picture...

Now its entirely possible that YOU caused the problem if you jammed down on the shaft too hard. You only need to press down enough to get the toothed pawls to disengage from each other to get some cable slack - maybe a 1/4" and not much more.
