54 Heater Core finish

Does anyone know the if the heater core on a 54 is painted or bare metal? It can be seen from the bottom of the heater box, which is painted semi-gloss black, but I don't know if it was installed prior to painting of the box. The judging manual (6th edition) doesn't mention if the core is painted but I want it to be as accurate as possible.

The heater core housing is a flat or semi flat black. The heater core itself is natural.
