    Re: 1954 engine not original

    Guy,

I'm going to drive mine to the Lone Star Regional, Oct. 22-24, at Frisco, TX and have it judged just to find out how much it is lacking in its current state of restoration. At that time my '54 will also have its rack & pinion steering installed, Dayton wire wheels, and an HEI electronic ignition. Here's the deal... I have all the correct parts to bring the car up to snuff with regard to these changes. For example, the judges will dock me for the wire wheels, but I know I have the original rims, wheel covers, and bias ply tires restore the lost points. Of course the wrong engine is never going to be replaced unless the engine fairy pays a visit.

If after judging it is within the realm of reasonable possibility for me to earn a 1st or 2nd flight award I'm going to go for it at the next opportunity. I encourage you to do the same, and best of luck to you.

    Don

p.s. In a different thread I lamented my lack of a correct dual pot air intake system. With some valuable help from several NCRS members I was able to locate a complete system which I purchased. I hope the rest of the points I need do not come at the same great expense.

Don, My engine isnt original either. Mine is resurrected now after a 22 year restoration. Im strugling with the same issue. I live 15 miles away from the hotel of this years convention and was thinking about driving mine there to get some opinions to see if its worthy. Canvas top is going on June 22 and short of the radio its complete (finally). Stay the course.

      Don,
Look forward to seeing you and your '54 at the Lone Star Regional. I could be wrong on this point but when I had my car judged last year at the Lone Star Regional I was docked points for not having my ignition shielding installed (totally understandable). I mentioned to the mechanical judges that I had the shielding at home in a box in the garage. One of them told me if I had brought it along and it was judged to be the shielding for my car then I wouldn't have received the full deduction. Wait for some judges to chime in on this point but if it proves to be valid it may behoove you to bring all your original stuff along to garner as many points as possible.

        Leif,

Now that's a good one! The man in charge of the work being done on my car was an NCRS judge. In spite of that he is from the "if it feels good, do it" school of thought regarding modifications that are not stock. I'm somewhere in-between slavish devotion to stock and the "let's paint it candy lime over gold metal flake." Adrian once commented that he wished someone who had done some functional modifications to their Vette would do just what you suggested, bring all the correct parts and set them on the ground next to the car. Can you see me with a set of mounted stock wheels/wheel covers/bias ply tires, ignition system, and steering parts next to my car? It should be a riot. Tempting, but I think the first time at this I'll color within the lines so I don't ruffle anybody's feathers.

            - Lief - it has to be installed - just as it left the factory - the top is removed for the judges to inspect the wire, distributor, etc.....
