    Used Brake Rotors Recyclable?

What do you do with used brake rotors? They are not on my town's list of recyclable items. It seems like an awful waste to throw 40 +/- pounds of metal in the general trash to go to a landfill. I can't be the first person to come across this. What do automotive repair shops do with used rotors, if they can't be turned and re-used.

They are VERY recyclable. Scrap steel/cast iron is a commodity that's in high demand.

Chris , I own a auto shop and there are scrap guys that come around and buy rotors, prices are down, but there generally pay .50 per rotor at my shop. last year I was getting a buck a piece. most auto places have a scrap pill as I do and I am sure that if you have a local guy you know just call him and ask, always best to recycle and do your part.

My location has a couple places to sell metal and aluminum cans, anything metal is taken to the recycle yard. They even buy cars/trucks. They buy small piles you unload on scales or put your loaded car/truck with the scrap if you have a lot and then weigh your car/truck after you unload they weigh your car/truck again and you have to give your drivers license to get their payment check.Even have a different facility that buys cars/trucks and melts them to make new steel. Have seen loads of cars/trucks flattened on trucks going down the road to the melting facility from other towns/citys. There is a local man that will even come to your house to pick up anything metal you are giving away.

There are several that advertise on Craig's list that do the same. One of them is close to me and he keeps a large truck next to his house that you can throw your stuff into. I stop by once a month and donate a couple hundred pounds of metal. It's convenient for me and it helps him out as that's his only income.

One of our local service clubs has an annual scrap metal drive to raise money. I try to keep items like brake rotors if I have room until the date of their drive. Nice to know the metal gets recycled and the money stays in the community.

We have once a week curbside recycling- paper in one bin and glass, metal in the other. Any large metal pieces are taken away by the freelance recyclers overnight....
