Folks: On the rare occasions when you leave your vehicle unattended what do you guys do to deter would be thieves? Many years ago I used a "crook lock" pretty effectively for short periods of time. What do you guys do?

Re: Theft Deterent
I agree with all the above.....but I still use smart preventive measures. Be as incognito as possible. Don't advertise to attract thieves in the first place. Who wants to go through the aftermath of a theft (claims, repairs etc). Like when I'm traveling with my car I use an unmarked, enclosed trailer and find a motel where I can make it harder for a thief to gain access, for example, park it under a bright parking lot light in front of the entrance, not in the back of the lot. Back the trailer into a wall if possible. I also use all the obvious stuff like good quality trailer and tongue locks, battery locks, tie down locks etc.
I don't know where you live, but maybe you need to move out of the city to to a spot where thievery is less likely. I'm kidding (but not really!)
If I'm out cruising with my wife and stop for a burger.....park it and sit inside with the car in full view. The obvious answer is....don't let it out of your sight! If I plan to leave the car unattended for more than 10 minutes.....I simply take the other car or leave someone sitting in it! Maybe I'm the nervous type....but you must be in today's world, driving these very rare, very desirable cars. 99.999% of people are simply admirers, but there's always that one person....the good news is car thefts are down about 1/3 in the nation for the past few years and I'm not sure why. Maybe it's because it's getting harder to peddle parts....but I agree.....there's always that one guy!
As they use to say...."Don't help a good boy go bad!"- Top

Re: Theft Deterrent
The risk depends where I park the car.
Overnight at a motel while traveling, stay in nicer places and remove the green knob. Many times, my car will be parked with other Corvettes. I figure there's safety n numbers.
At restaurants, try to keep it in view.
At car shows, remove the gas cap and cigarette lighter.- Top

There is nothing as effective as the Dale Pearman Method of security. Give me a big log chain and a telephone pole anytime!!!!!
You may find a picture and description of this method in one of the older "Restorer" magazines!

Re: Theft Deterrent
I always ask if I can part the car directly in front of the lobby at the check-in area of motels; well-lighted and in plain view of employees and most have security cameras. They usually accede to this as it doesn't hurt them to have a happy tenant and a fine looking car out front. You just have to park there late enough and far enough away from the idiots unloading suitcases from their minivans - there is usually plenty of room.- Top
