1970 Corvette Steering Gear Box

Hi All,

Looking for information regarding original 1970 Steering Gear Boxes. I understand they were manufactured by Saginaw. What was the correct casting number on the outside of the box. Any other signs to determine an original box? Where they dated?

I know early production cars had natural finishes and mid to late 70's were painted gloss black. Anything else?

The casting number on the steering box was 5677649, the same as found on all 1963-82 Corvettes. As far as I know, no reproductions have this number on them. In fact, very late GM SERVICE steering boxes didn't have it, either. The steering box will also have a Saginaw "S" logo cast on it. No dates I know of.

L1969-82 Corvette steering box covers were die cast aluminum and have no casting numbers.
