Try the old "teenager" trick of syphoning fuel out of the tank.... If you are good at it, you can probably empty the tank.......- Top

Wouldn't it be simplest to start with using a coat hanger through the filler and lift the float to the top of it's travel and see what it reads and where the float is when you get that reading. If the float is coming in contact with the top of the tank before it hits the stop on the sending unit you know an adjustment in the float arm is what's required.
Push it to the bottom and see where it is relative to the stop in the empty position. This will tell you where it will be reading on that day you run out of fuel on the way to the service station.

Re: Calibrating gas gauge to sending unit 1967
I filled the ol girl's tank up to the bottom of the filler neck Saturday, and the gauge got closer to full, not not all the way there. Then drove it round trip (approx. 150 miles total) to a car show to compete and drive most of the gas out of the tank. Will get it down some more this Sat. coming up on a 40 mile trip. I should be able to check the ohms at empty and use a coat hanger to check the full ohms Sunday morning 1st thing. I forgot I had promised 2 of the grandkids I'd take them to a gun show and college baseball game, so that pre-emptied doing anything on the car. I'm thinking now that maybe the float arm needs to be bent a little to get the gauge to read full, since it went almost to full when filled to the neck. I'm assuming it will take a lot of trial and error to get the arm bent to the right location. Any suggestions on this if this is indeed the case? AS ALWAYS TIA Al- Top
