C6 Grand Sport tire mounting help

The Goodyear's on my GS hare spent. I ordered new tires from an on-line company and had them shipped to a local installer, a national tire chain. When they arrived I was very politely told they could not mount them. I checked several other local shops, both local and national chains, if they could mount them. Only one could do it but said their machine would probably end up scratching them so they weren't really interested in doing the job.

I'm in Suffolk County NY, anyone know of someone that can mount them in my area?? Some may say my local dealer but the dealer I trust isn't very local and not convenientl. Thanks for any help!!

Not local to you, but I will share my experience and perhaps you will get an idea.
I bought all four or five sets of tires from Tire Rack. All but one set were mounted at their warehouse ~100 miles away. The outlier set was mounted at a "Speed Shop" (for want of a better term -- they do sell and install speed parts, but also make resto-mods on C6 chassis.) when I had a catastrophic tire failure on the road.

More recently I have twice gone to Discount Tire in Illinois for slow leaks and they installed tire pressure sensor rebuild kits (I think the rebuild kit consists of a new O-Ring) with no damage, and no charge, each time. They will get my future business.

It looks like the closest Discount Tire store to you is in Western Ohio or Michigan. I hope someone close to you can provide more relevant information.

Tom...I have used Savage Autosports on Rte 112 in Medford with great results for changing & balancing tires for my Z06/Z07...been very pleased with their work and they have the equipment to mount & match balance the tires to the rims etc...haven't been there since they moved to the new location, but their work has always been good for me...

        Terry,

Would you pick them over the trip to Tire Rack?
I'm just quite leery about places like Discount Tire or Belle Tire.

I believe that Discount Tire and America's Tire are the same company. I always thought that Discount Tire was their internet-based company and America's Tire their retail store company. However, it may be that in certain parts of the country their retail stores operate under the Discount Tire banner. In any event, I have found America's Tire to be a GREAT place to buy tires. Their prices are very competitive, their service wonderful, and they're very honest and straight-forward. They only sell tires and wheels so they don't try to sell you any other services. Their focus is entirely on tires and wheels. That's what I like.

Americas Tire and Discount Tire are one in the same. I know that in Oregon, they are Americas Tire, and in Washington state they are Discount tire. I assume that it is a state by state name issue. If you have had any work done by them, you will be in their computer wherever you go. IMHO, they do good work and stand by it. They will even prorate tire wear and discount when buying a new set of tires if you have bought from them before (they did for some truck tires I bought). I have purchased tires through them for my '67' although I had another local outfit mount and balance because they could balance on the car (front wheels only unless you have a non positraction differential).

The Discount Tire store I went to (about 5 to 7 miles from home) was recommended by some of my Chapter members. They do the tire work for Corvette Mike (about 3-miles from the store). My experiences at this store have been extremely positive, but I can imagine the quality of the service may change from store to store.

Although I bought the Corvette tires at Tire Rack this store has repaired them (two TPMS rebuild kits) for free. I understand the free repairs regardless of where the tires are purchased is a corporate policy. They did outstanding work. No damage and effective repairs. I needed a single tire for the Camaro and went there instead of Tire Rack. It was a little more expensive in that I can mount the tire from Tire Rack myself in school, but absent the mounting and balancing charge the prices were close to the same -- and I didn't have to wrestle with the tire. I selected the tire (in stock in the store according to the computer -- and it was) made the appointment on-line and the wife brought the car to them. They worked on the car when promised and she was in and out in a snap. It was easier for me. No 100 mile drive into a different time zone. Just pay the bill.

My observations of their work shows they use care when jacking the car and torque the lug nuts by hand -- no torque sticks (I don't want to get into that debate, anyway). They measure the tread depth on all the tires, but they don't do that all the time and they don't measure at more than one point across the tread. I am sure their motivation is to sell new tires when possible, but they cite safety concerns for their diligence.

If you have a Discount Tire near-by, stop in and watch them. This store has a window in the waiting area that overlooks the shop. Or bring them one of your driver cars and see how they do. Each time I brought them the Corvette I had no appointment. The first time they were very busy and I waited a couple of hours. The second time they promised an hour, and they were exactly right. Since the work was free I didn't mind either wait.

I believe, as both you and Joe stated, America's Tire and Discount Tire are the same company.

The store I went to has the latest (well as of a year ago anyway) Hunter Road Force balance machines and the employee running it seemed to understand how to use it -- match the high and low sides of the tire to the rim and hide the weights behind the spoke(s). When H had to ahve the tires replaced on the road (near Des Moines) that shop allowed the operator to give us a 25-cent tour of the Hunter Road Force balance machine. It takes a good deal of skill and training to use all the capabilities of those machines.

I had a catastrophic tire failure on the road in Texas and the tire was mounted by the local Chevrolet dealer with no problem.

Thanks to all that have helped out with suggestions. I did find a place to mount them. Should be done this evening. I'll let you know how it goes.
