I have a 63 fuelie and have been running a reproduction delco coil. I would like to put a hotter coil on the car to see if it would improve starting. Any recommendations? Thanks. Richie

Re: Coil for 1963 fuel injection
MSD makes coils that have a higher voltage output but the stock Delco system should start the FI on the first piston up. My advise would be to check with someone more familiar with FI!
There are several that advertise in "The NCRS Driveline."

Re: Coil for 1963 fuel injection
A coil's output voltage only reaches what it needs to overcome the resistance up to and across the plug. If all you do is change the coil the voltage across the plug is going to be exactly the same. The spark won't be any "hotter". You probably already have half your current coil's output in reserve. A higher output coil will simply increase the amount in reserve.
GM went to a High Energy Ignition with more coil output so they could fire plugs with .060 and 080 plug gaps as opposed to your .035 gap. They wanted that plug gap to more reliably ignite the leaner mixtures of the post emissions cars.
As Joe said, I'd be looking elsewhere for the cause of your hard start.

Re: Coil for 1963 fuel injection
Richard, Don Baker and I recommend FI Owners to buy nice NOS or good used 202. Typically on a '65 FI car, etc.
High output coil. The original 091's are super expensive. Is the coi a 202 or 022? I forget. Back to work as spring Carlisle is in a few days. John D.- Top

Re: Coil for 1963 fuel injection
Richard,
Before I ran any reproduction coil I would go to NAPA and buy a American made IC-12 for your car. I have heard nothing good about these repro coils. You will not find the repro 091 coil embossed correctly anyway.
Sometimes a NOS 202 coil will show up on ebay but I am not sure what they sell for now.- Top

John,
I guess you are probably right about American made parts, that being the case I would use ebay and find one new that someone is selling.
My 63 has a made in USA IC-12 coil from NAPA and works fine, what's a NOS 202 coil worth these days if you can find one.- Top

Re: Coil for 1963 fuel injection
There are different reproduction coils available. The ones made in China are junk. It is my understanding that Paragon or Keen sells a US made reproduction coil. I have been using theirs on several cars without any headaches. As important as having the correct coils is to have the correct ballast resistor. There are two available with different resistance values. (One has a blue stripe, the other one black dot.) The resistor has to be correct for the coil being used.
Hope this helps, Marco- Top
