Gary & Allen, I did not have any 30# UL felt in the shop, But the guy I started with in 1977 says he has a roll that I will get Sunday. I did look at my 66 and the felt on the gas tank is thicker than 30# regular felt. I do not know how thick it should be but was hit by one of our well know judges. I am glad if it is not correct. Will get back to all when I get the felt, may be Tuesday though if I have to get it from the supply house.

The typical thickness of that felt is 0.09, and I too just built up the thickness using multiple strips of felt. The trick is to get a finished product which does not show any layers

Gary & Allen, I did get a hold of the UL 30# felt and regular 30#. The UL is 0.065 or about and the regular 30# is 0.030. I stopped by a well known shop in my area and the owner and his head guy said the UL was as close as you could come. Send me a PM and I will mail you a piece. If you need enough for the tank I have a roll and could cut strips. It is thick!
