Hi all,
I got a tantalizing e from a guy a guy named Dennis in Chicago that says he grew up being taken to tracks around the southern end of Lake Michigan, such as the US 30 Dragstrip in Gary, Indiana, the US 131 Motorsports Park in Martin, MI, Great Lakes Dragaway in Union Grove, Wisconsin and the Oswego Dragway in Oswego, Illinois.
He says his dad and uncle drag raced and his uncle filmed 100s of hours of drag races and that Lil Twister is in there. He says that Lil Twister was originally a 350 horse 327. Dennis' dad says it was "actually a worked 365 horsepower that they ran with hydraulic lifters. Later on they built bigger engines and had a tunnel ram on it for while and fuel injected it for a time. It was always a very successful first class car. It was very fast and straight as a laser."
He goes on to say that there was a Cheveland Team, consisting of two partners and pit crew. He says one partner raced Lil Twister and the other partner raced a 1965 Z16 396 Chevelle, known as The Twister. Both were painted with the same paint scheme. Dennis said that he never knew what Cheveland meant.
Unfortunately, Dennis has not responded to an email in two weeks and seems to have dropped off the face of the earth. Until I hear from him, all I can do is follow the leads in the email he did send. So far, I'm drawing the same blank as I have for the past 11 months of searching. I've even checked on the Chevelle with no results. My target area, however, is narrowed.
So, I'm wondering if any of you might be able to steer me to someone who has some connection with any of these four tracks who might be able to help me get in contact with the two Cheveland partners or any member of their pit crew?
Thanks,
Bob
