    Fusible Links in 67 wiring.

I have a small block 66, and would like to install fusible links in my wiring harness to give my car the short circuit protection that was installed in 67 Corvettes. I would like to know exactly where these links should be installed in my car and what guage of link to install in the specific locations. Thank you in advance for your feed back.

    Jeff -

The primary protection is a 14-ga. fusible link inserted where the 10-ga. red main power feed wire connects to the big terminal on the starter solenoid, and a 20-ga. fusible link inserted where the 16-ga. black/white battery gauge sense wire connects to the screw terminal buss on the horn relay.

The 14 gauge fusible link wire used to be available from GM under GM #6292995 but it's now discontinued. The 16 gauge wire is still available under GM #19256291. The only problem with either one is that you have to buy 50 FEET. That much would last a guy quite awhile.

NAPA (and probably other auto parts stores) sells fusible links in various gages that will work just fine. They won't be the same color wire as original GM, but that should not be a big problem. They (NAPA) will sell just the wire or the wire with various end connectors. Also check Ebay for GM old stock.

What's the difference between fusible link wire and regular old wire? I would think 2 gauges less would cause it to blow before the main wire 100% of the time. Anyone know? If there is no difference, it would be easier to find a color closer to original GM than with the NAPA stuff. Anyone know for sure?

Cliffs Notes: Fusible link wire has a special fire retardant outer coating versus regular wire.

In a nutshell, this seems to be what Steve LaVigne's link says as well.
