Long story short, need damage control advise on c2 coupe paint

I sent my 65 coupe body to what was suppose to be a top shelf corvette specialty paint shop in south west Ohio. My mistake.
Although there were several disappointing issues, my main concern is that there was no seam sealer applied to either rain gutter prior to being painted and that is the way it was returned to me after 11 months and mega bucks spent. My question is, what is the proper repair procedure for this dilemma. Is there seam sealer that can be applied over top of paint (ERMINE WHITE) or do the gutters and the roof need to be stripped and start from scratch. Needless to say, I "burnt the bridge" with this outfit so now I will find someone else to clean up the mess. Thanks to all for your input!

    Doug,

I don't really have a good answer for you but I though I would post the AIM page for what I think your talking about. The sealer on Note 1?

Perhaps someone else will chime in with some ideas.

      Doug,

There are plenty of 3M sealers that can be applied over the existing white paint and then sealed and painted white again. If that's the only problem nearly any body shop can perform a patch job in the gutters.

Joe Ray's idea is as good as it gets. Check the 3M seam sealers. Some come in white are in caulking tubes others in cans and are bushed on and they are paintable.

Most of the "new" 3M seam sealers will work over your paint . Dont use the old stuff that was around when your car was built .

A top shelf Corvette speciality paint shop will not fix your cars problem?
Did you personally talk to other users and see their finished product before leaving your car for such a long time?

More important than what color the paint is you want to know what type of paint. Is it lacquer, or urethane or acrylic enamel? Is it base/clear or single stage. Ideally you would also like to know what brand and line as well. There are plenty in the industry as good, if not better, than 3m. The Fusor line by Lord is one that I like and is favoured by a lot of shops. I had an unsatisfactory experience with the Pro-Form line and wouldn't use it again.

As William said, you don't want an old school seam sealer. There are plenty of them still out there, made by 3M and all the other manufacturer, that are perfectly fine for the most projects. But what you want is a two part (catalyzed) sealer.

Once you've decided on that you need to determine what type of 2 part seam sealer. A self leveling? A non-sag? Brushable? Then you look at the spec sheets for the seam sealer you want to use. It will tell you what substrates are acceptable for the sealer you want to use. In as much as the entire jamb will need to be painted (unless you used lacquer), if your paint type is not an acceptable substrate (I wouldn't suppose lacquer is) you would only need to strip the area that the sealer will come in contact with. Then prep and paint the jamb area.

Not a big deal, but as it appears you may have learned already, it's good to know what questions to ask of your body shop in advance of the work being done.

Mistakes in due diligence on my part were made prior to the selection of this shop to do the work. Another lesson learned and water over the dam.
As to the type and brand of paint used, BASF single stage acrylic although Dupont urethane was on the original quote spec.

Is that an acrylic enamel, an acrylic lacquer, or an acrylic urethane. With many of the old school acrylic enamels use of a hardener was optional. It's important to know if that was used.

If it were me I would want to know the codes of the products used. Ie, in Dupont's Nason line, 496-00 clear with 483-15 catalyst. Doing a repair of a fairly fresh non catalyzed finish takes certain precautions to prevent lifting.

3M use to make a clear seam sealer. If they do not make it anymore I would check around and see if any one makes a clear sealer . Squeeze some out into a baggy and the mix some of your touch up paint with the sealer . Now you have seam sealer that correctly matches you paint . Cut one corner of the baggy off and now you have a applicator.Mask both side of were you want the sealer to go and then apply the sealer .Pull the masking tape off . You can tool it with your finger . Try not to leave much at the edge of the tape because it will leave a line. Now when it dries it will probably be dull. I would re mask it and go to the paint store and have them mix some clear with hardener in a spray can.And spar clear over the new sealer. if you don't used a clear with hardener . the sealer will stay tacky and absorb dirt.Give me a call and I will walk you through it Dan 9one3 5one5 372one
