    Mid Yr Oil Canister

Are there different internal rubber seal designs at the bottom of the bolt? The soft copper washer must be in good shape to seal, I know that. But what about the rubber seal? I have two canisters both virgin originals. One has a much bigger rubber seal than the other.

Gene -- here's the can off a 961 2-bolt BB assembled June 7th '65. I've never had it on a running car, so I don't know if it would leak as shown.
Order (L to R): bolt head, copper washer, spring, thin steel washer, rubber gasket, hold down cup.

      Wayne,
Yes your photo looks same as one of mine. The other one of mine had a bigger rubber seal. I'm assuming that the rubber seal just maintains the oil going thru the filter rather than just blow by. Do you see it the same?

Gene -- yes, prevents dirty oil (outside canister side of filter) from leaking past the cone and bolt shaft and into the center core (should be filtered oil there).

I see Long Island sells an "oil filter can repair seal kit", item 38-11C which includes the copper washer, steel washer, and the rubber gasket, as well as a retaining clip (which I must be missing ?) and a steel tube [which I assume slides over the bolt shaft and in order to compress the cone on the spring]. I used to just push down on the cone and turn it 90 degrees on the bolt shaft.

          Wayne,
You are not missing a retaining ring. The original bolt had a pinch crimp to retain the steel cup. I have turned a groove in the bolt where the crimp was and install a retaining ring. I was able to fab some soft copper washers. The rubber washer was the only piece I was concern about. I think I'll have something to fit the application in my old box of saved seals and rubber parts. I'll go with the smaller seal for both my canisters. thank you

I rebuilt my filter housing. Rather than buy the LI Corvette kit, I sourced my own copper washers and the retaining clip/ring. The retaining clip/ring is an internal tooth lock washer. Works great. I pushed it down the bolt with a piece of electrical conduit. That's what LI Corvette provides in their kit too. I had to buy 100 of these lock washers, so I have lots left. If anybody wants any, please email me. Free to a good home.

                Jeff,
Thank you, I already made some up out of soft copper.

                Christopher,
An internal star washer is not for that purpose. It could split and then where are you? Suggest to do it the correct way to cut a retaining ring groove and use the proper retaining ring tool to install. That will insure that you don't get a piece of broken off metal in your oil passage.
