Decided that I might as well throw a carpet kit in this winter while I have the seats out , and discovered that the car must have come from the factory with a set of speakers behind the seats, apparently all the worker had available for tools were a drill and a cold chisel .

Re: Very rare , rear speaker option
Yikes. While working on old cars, I've learned to be ready for surprises when-
a) Stripping paint
b) Removing the dash
c) Removing the carpetMark Edmondson

Re: Very rare , rear speaker option
I can't believe that; A- somebody would do this to a corvette, and B - whoever painted it last ( probably 25 to 30 years ago ) didn't bother to fix it, the rest of the car is in really nice , mostly original condition.Attached Files- Top

Re: Very rare , rear speaker option
Looks beautiful, Dave. It's hard to judge paint from a photo, but it seems in really good condition for being 30 years old.
I've painted a few cars, and worked with many painters. Don't be too hard on whoever painted it last. Carpet is typically not removed during a paint job- even one prepped correctly and thoroughly- unless it's part of an more extensive restoration that includes the interior.Mark Edmondson

Re: Very rare , rear speaker option
Thanks Mark, the paint is pretty decent, I repainted the hood in polyurethane to try to match the acrylic lacquer , turned out nice. The reason I know they didn't bother to fix that panel is because you can see red overspray around the edges of the interior, they had pulled the carpet out to do the paint job. The car was originally Silver Pearl, and in the next year or so I will pull the body off and return it to that. ( one of my top picks for color anyway) the car had every single indicator still present that it originally was an L 71 , so I have put together this date coded replacement motor for it, soon to be installed.Attached Files- Top

Nice looking motor; that car is lucky to have you as its caregiver. Resuing an original big-block Corvette from past misfortunes is always a good thing.Mark Edmondson

Re: Very rare , rear speaker option
Those holes certainly make it easy for you to put a couple of huge woofers in so that you can maximize the teeth rattling base for benefit of every other car at the stoplight. I know they'll appreciate such thoughtfulness...Mike

Re: Very rare , rear speaker option
Bet there was a certain drop in value (although unknown at the time) the instant that 2 speaker holes were cut in the rear back panel of this '66 L79 tanker. One of 3 known N03 cars ever ordered in Canada.
P.S. 99% probability I have the 5 original K.O.'s off this loaded (except air) car.Attached FilesLast edited by Wayne M.; April 6, 2015, 05:20 PM.- Top
