    1956 Thermostat Housing...painted or plated?

    Hi,

The 6th edition JG states the 1956 Corvette aluminum intakes used the 3705018 CAD plated cast iron thermostat housing.

Experts are divided....it was painted argent silver, no it wasn't....it was CAD plated!

Jeeze, has anyone ever seen a CAD plated housing....just asking!

I'm trying to get it correct!

    Thanks!

      Hi Mike,

Hmmm, your observation is very interesting....no sign of cad on them. I would like to go along with the program, but.....?

In any case, I'm having trouble even finding a place in CA that will CAD plate them....any suggestions?

      Thanks man!

Mine were painted and not cad plated. Also, some 56 passenger cars used the same housing; and I have seen them not cad plated. Some of those were painted.

            Hi Mark,

Thank you for that! Have you ever seen a cad plated housing?

            Thanks again!

If you want to have the housing plated, have it zinc plated. No one can visually tell the difference between zinc and cadmium. Of course, you will want dull zinc just as you would want "dull" cadmium (cadmium or zinc can be dull or shiny).

Electroplating Specialties (EPS) in Hayward, CA does both cad and zinc plating (or, at least, used to do so). However, as with virtually all platers, there is a minimum charge. So, if you have 1 piece or 100 pieces, the charge will be the same. Consequently, having just 1 piece plated will be VERY costly.

                  Hi Joe,

                  Ok, great....Hayward is relatively local.

I actually do have an additional item to plate, the cresent shaped ignition wire shields I received were terrible:

Anyway, it just seems that there were a large number of painted housings on factory cars....I wonder why they are not acceptable as well?

                  Thanks so much!

Personally, I've never seen any GM thermostat housing that was plated. The only type I've seen used on aluminum manifolds were painted with dull aluminum paint if cast iron and natural aluminum if aluminum.

I've got to admit, though, that may familiarity with this particular C1 thermostat housing is minimal.

Thank you Mark! It seems to be a very rare/elusive original part.

Send your parts directly to the plater if you like. Beringer's Plating in Akron Ohio They do wonderful cadmium plating but expect to pay big bucks. Used to be in the old days (5 years ago) cad plating was not a big expense in restorations. Today it is. The good thing about Beringer's is they have never lost a part for me. Been using them now for an eon. I would rather play for high quality plating than go elsewhere where you can get a bucket of parts done for less money and the quality of the plating is not up to par.
They have a website but I don't have a link. Located 1211 DeValera Ave., Akron, OH 44310 330-633-8409

How to get the most bang for your buck when having parts cadmium plating. Get a ton of parts plated at the same time. The more you get the best value you will receive. Don't think about sending a small box of parts/trinkets. You can but expect to pay. John D

I have heard about cad plated water outlets but so far have never seen one. That doesn't mean anything though. But I have been into water outlets for at least 50 years and haver yet to see one plated.
Might be a good idea though if it will pass judging.
Or just use Krylon Dull Aluminum after first blasting the part. JD
