    1958 Thermostat Gauge

I have a completely rebuilt Thermostat gauge in my dash cluster. It is NOT reading the temperature or seem to be working, need some help trouble shooting. Can someone guide me how to test the gauge and also check wire lead from the Thermostat sensor.

    Thanks,

    ERic

Eric, I had a similar problem with my '56. My gauge showed the engine to be running hot but no water overflowed. I ended up putting in another sending unit that I had laying around my shop which did not fix the problem. I also removed the water pump to make sure the impeller was turning as it should and it was. I then bought an infared thermometer which I should have done first. I bought mine at Harbor Freight. I then got readings at several points and it showed the engine was not running hot. I finally got a sending unit from Lectric Limited and the gauge reads properly. If you have no reading at all, then you may have a wiring problem. Did you go with a new harness? I wish you all the best with your project. Brooks Glover (2141)

[QUOTE=Brooks Glover (2141);740446]Brooks, I did buy a new wiring harness and all my gauges were rebuilt. I shoot the engine with an inferred gauge like you described. At the thermostat I was running at 175 to 185 degrees. Center of the manifold below the carburetor it was 210 and the back of the manifold 175 to 190. I I had some antifreeze overflow but i think I filled it to high afterward it ran out a little never overflowed again. I need to understand how to check the wiring and the gauge before changing the sending unit out. It is brand new as well.

      Thanks,
      Eric
