    1967 coupe vent window glass removal

    I have a dated vent window glass I would like to replace a non dated vent window glass. has anyone successfully removed the glass while the vent frame was still in the car? or must I remove the assembly? and is the set tape in the frame something I can get at a glass shop?

    I'm sure you could but the effort would be better spent removing the vent window as an assembly from the car first.

    Consider that pressing the new glass with new sealing strip in the chrome channel will be difficult enough without the added worry of damage to the car.

        I was at a friend's Restoration shop last week. He had a '67 with a vent window "glassless", while the vent assembly was still in the car. I said to him that I didn't realize you could change the glass while the assembly still installed. He said he's done it many times.

        He said you just pull it from the frame( window open of coarse) after applying plenty of soapy water. Reinstallation similar, with new sealing tape and again plenty of soapy water.

        I'd like to try it someday.

        p.s. yes most glass shops have the setting tape, or most Corvette vendors.

          Keith I removed the vent glass on my 63 with a pocket screwdriver from the top and it came right out. and can be reinstalled with WD40( I am sure soap also works), If you need new tape I have a roll, can send you some, let me know. I should add my car is a convertible.

            I seem to remember that there was an article in "The Corvette Restorer" a few years ago on resetting a vent window glass. The vent window was out of the car and and a jig was made to reset the glass.

              I realize that this is an old thread, but possibly my recent experience will help someone in the future. I just replaced the driver's side vent window glass in my 67 coupe. The reason for doing so was that the glass had a bad scratch in it. There were no problems with the regulator or frame. For this reason, I felt that the least risky way was to replace the glass with the frame still installed in the car. I reasoned that the car made the most stable stand for the window assembly that I could ask for. What was I going to do - go through all of the grief involved in removing the assembly so that I could put it in a vise or something? Mind you that this car had just been stripped and repainted not two weeks prior... I know, I know, I should have done this job before, but with the new paint and chrome the scratched glass REALLY looked bad! Anyhow, I removed the side mirror and opened the vent window 90 degrees. One fender cover was draped through the large side window across the door, and another one was taped across the door and fender just below the vent window. I ran a razor knife between the seal/tape and the glass on both sides. A little liquid soap was squirted in there also. I inserted a small pocket screw driver between the top rear edge of the glass and the frame and worked it slightly while pulling on the glass and working it up and down with my other hand. The glass was out in less than 3 minutes. A new strip of tape was folded and placed in the window frame channel. A few small pieces of masking tape helped keep it in place. Soap (hand cleaner) was applied around the new piece of glass on both sides where it would go into the channel. The new glass slid into the channel in like 10 seconds. The excess width of sealing tape sticking out of the channel on both sides of the glass was trimmed off with a razor blade, and the job was complete. My biggest concern while doing this was pulling too hard/not being patient enough while removing the old glass and possibly breaking the hinge loose from the window frame. I had no desire to save the old glass, but it did come out in one piece. In summary, I feel this is the way to go if the only issue with your vent window is the glass itself. I believe there would have been a much greater chance of damaging the paint if I had decided to remove the vent window assembly from the car, not to mention the time and work involved.
