    4656 fuel pump finish

I need to send my fuel pump out for rebuild. If it was just a mechanical refresh, I would do it myself but the outside has some surface corrosion on it and I would like to have it refinished. Talking with one rebuilder - well known - they tell me all they do is lightly glass bead the outer surfaces. Is this correct or should it have some form of alodine on it? I've seen ones seem to have a greenish hue to them, not bare aluminum.

    Thoughts? Recommended rebuilders?

I don't know what his definition of "lightly" is, but the carbs I have seen for sale have a distinct micro-pitted appearance to them after they have been blasted; maybe they were blasted with sand or some other more abrasive media than glass bead.

Tom, The original '4657 '63, etc pump castings look like bare aluminum. Smooth and original they were shiney. Same as the fuel injection castings of that era. I imagine your earlier pump would be the same.'
Glass beeding or aluminum as a final step is not typical of what one would expect to see.
Service replacement castings were often dichromated.
The biggy is the rebuild kit you use to do your pump. You need a kit for todays ethanol. Contact Oldtime Pars aka Jackson's Old Tim Parts. They have a website. Nice kits although the colors and type of gasketss not OEM looking. But at least your pump won't leak and conk out for ethanol. sales@oldtimeparts.com

Dont' remove the pin on top of the pump that is holding all those "blades" or whatever they are called. If you do then your pump will stand out in the crowd as having a pin with two C clips on the end holding it together.
No I don't rebuild pumps but since they cause me so much grieve in the FI world I know a little bit about them.

Thanks for the info John. Below is a picture of what I'm starting with. This is, what may be, the original pump from my 60 that should also be correct for the 58 if I can get it "restored". I suppose I was thinking they all had a chemical conversion process done to them because all of the pumps I have seen are probably service replacements.

Nice to know about the pin, but as you can see.......... When I got it, it was already disassembled, but I have all of the parts.

Hi Dave, As you well know your castings are at the far end of the spectrum. Aka totally trashed. The bottom cover gets a lot of abuse from road salt. Highly unlikely those castings will end up in show condtion.
Nice thing is the inside of the pump is like new. That's also the color of the original finish on the outside. Just plain old aluminum.
Too bad the boys have not reproduced the bottom cover that is held on with two screws. Typically they are in horrible condition and the end result is nothing to brag about when you attempt to have that part refinished. Good luck, John
