I ran accross an odd BB oil cap with a square "s" Logo in the rivet. Any one know what it is for.

Re: Big Block Oil Cap
As Pete said, it is definitely original for a 65 396 and also commonly seen on early 66 big blocks. The finish ranges from a green tint to an all black. I have several of each type (round s and square s) and the ones with original finishes all differ.

Re: Big Block Oil Cap
Pete,
I didn't say the cap was plated! I said the finishes range from a green tint to a black. Typically the early caps I have seen/ have are black over cad. But one in particular that I have does not appear to have ever been black. Of course over the last 50 years it could have burnt off or chipped off. Who knows!?

Re: Big Block Oil Cap
Bill - The 1966 NCRS TIM&JG in the Oil Fill System, Big Block reads "Cap are plated black which may have a tendency to turn a greenish hue. The letter "S" is stamped into the rivet, also stamped next to the rivet is a single stamping of the Stant Manufacturing trademark symbol which is "sm" inscribed within two concentric circles."
The photo of an example shows the rounded "S" but examples with the square "S" have been observed & like many things like running changes occurred during Production. Also, close examination of the "sm" stamping shows it to be SMC in a circle.
I expect the new 1965 NCRS TIM&JG will detail the information on the 1965 Big Block Oil Filler Cap.

Pete.I took my cap outside in the semi warm Il.sun and it is black with no shades of green .I have seen the green ones but I dont have any . This is the one off 16120 as you can see it has had a hard life and has been dropped a few times .DSCN1825.jpgDSCN1826.jpgDSCN1828.jpgDSCN1831.jpg- Top
