repair is for a complete rebuild.... over 525.00 decided to pick up , any suggestions for a plan B

It's out & at the shop. Having the whole speedo redone makes sense to me It's like doing a partial engine rebuild. It makes no sense.

Wally - Any 'noise' from your speedo housing while it's bouncing?

Wally...very often the fix is to lubricate the cable...I would start there first...

for starters, i put a drill motor on back of speedo head and still see needle bounce.
is this correct to say the problem is in the head and not the cable? or hooking a drill motor
is not the right thing to do. the speedo works fine with no noise, just a 10 mph jump back and forth

Wally - Which way did you have the drill turning?

Just checking - I've never tried it forwards and was wondering if you did check it that way would the needle still bounce but only hang around the starting peg.

You might check with other repair shops. Some are listed in the driveline. Ask for references. There is a wide range of prices to fix any old gauge. Some shops believe that because you own a collectable you have money to throw away.

I'd call and talk to Bill Harrison down here in Florida: http://www.harrisonspeedometer.com/contactme.html
He is used by a lot of my Corvette pals. $525 seems high to me for repairing a bouncing needled - but I haven't had gauge work done in 7 years so who knows ??

I'm with Vinnie, start with the cable.....Remove it from the car, clean the inside of the outer cable, clean the inner cable, lube the inner and put it back together.

You may also look for any signs that grease has worked its way up the cable and into the mechanism. That is a no no. Excessive bounce can also break the pointer, and may indicate the speed cup is going to fail.

It should cost no more than $185.00 to completely rebuild the frame with new bearings, new #1, new #2 and new #3. That should fix any speedometer. Now that is not a cosmetic rebuild but it should work for another 100,000 miles or more. Of course that won't include shipping!

Various rebuilders advertise in the Driveline. I had my 54 speedo rebuilt by D and M Restorations, 800-722-0854. They fixed my bouncing needle and quick turn around. I don't recall the cost but is wasn't $525.
