    C2 Engine Mounts

    Does anyone know if engine mounts on a 64 can be changed without pulling the engine ?

    Thanks,
    Jim

    Yes, they can be replaced without pulling the engine. However, you do have to raise the engine slightly. The best way to do this is to use a jack and a fabricated "U" shaped fixture which seats on the forward side of the block. This is easy to fabricate out of wood. John Hinckley has posted pictures of such a device in the past.

      Joe,

      Thanks for your response, I sent John an email asking for a picture.

      Maybe I should start another post for these but would you know ....

      1) will I need to drop exhaust manifolds & clutch lever assembly,
      2) how much of transmission mountings will I need to disconnect,
      3) and is there a good source for buying replacement engine mounts.

      Thanks again,
      Jim Peterman

        1) You don't really need to drop the exhaust manifolds or clutch lever assembly. However, it will make it easier if you remove the nuts on the exhaust manifold-to-exhaust pipe flange. You could also just remove the nut on the frame side of the clutch cross shaft. As I mentioned, though, doing this is not absolutely necessary;

        2) You don't really need to remove the transmission mounting, either. However, it's not a bad idea to remove the two bolts that fasten the mount to the transmission. This is VERY easy to do;

        3) I don't know of a source for HIGH QUALITY engine mounts. I think about the best you can do is an Anchor brand mount. Unless something has changed recently, it will be of off-shore manufacture.

          JIM : u will almost certainly need to modify the plug wire boomerangs that hug the side of the block (if yours are originals) as they will interfere with the replacement motor mounts that are somewhat larger than the original mounts. or if u don't have any boomerangs, then c-3 sbc boomerangs will fit without modification. mike

            Yes, if locking style mounts are used, modification of the boomerangs will be necessary. However, both locking and original style mounts are available. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND that the locking style mounts be used, though, even though they are not original for a 1964.

              Comes down to judging. I left my originals in place until the car was judged. 5 points originality and 5 for condition.
