    67 L71 freeze plugs

Two new questions for my 67 427/435 engine rebuild

    1. My L71 was disassembled/reassembled prior to my ownership and brass freeze plugs were installed. The car was judged Top Flight 3 times with the brass plugs present and there were no written or verbal comments made by the judges regarding the brass plugs. I'm unable to locate any reference to the freeze plugs in the latest edition of the TIMJG. So will I be okay installing brass plugs as long as there is not a manufacturer name or logo present? I think we will all agree brass is better than steel.

    2. The last Top Flight judging on my car I was dinged for too much overspray on the intake. There are a lot of comments and advice regarding this subject throughout the forum but nothing concrete has been established. It's a moving target. To make matters even more complicated, I've studied various original photos and although they were mostly black/white very little overspray was present on the intake and most of it from what I can tell is on the raised edge of the manifold. This observation is based on the shadows or darker areas present on the manifolds in the photos. Any input would be helpful.

    Thanks

Brass freeze plugs are not typical factory production but when painted they look like all the other freeze plugs and don't corrode from the inside. You are correct in not wanting any manufactures logo on the plugs. You might need to hit the plugs with a little glass bead to give it a better surface for paint.

        Re: 67 L71 freeze plugs

To address your second inquiry - it must have had a LOT of overspray on it to get a deduct. There are lots of pictures of Bowtie cars evidencing varying amounts of overspray on the intake. 2 inches up the runners would probably be too much, 1/8 of an inch would probably be too little. Search the archives for some pictures. They're in there. If you have no luck, email me and I would be happy to shoot you some pictures I have of some Bowtie cars and overspray. Regards. Yes there was a lot of overspray. At least 2 inches up the runners and thick. I have searched the archives and did find a few pictures but none of Bowtie cars. Probably user error. I determined the overspray covers the raised face on the outboard edges of the intake and at the most 1/2" inboard. I will take you up on some of your Bowtie pics. I want to get this right. Thank you for your reply. Kerry
