1962 Fiberglass Heater Cover/Package Tray Support

Corvette Central currently lists this part as "unavailable due to manufacturing problems". Any ideas for a source ?

    Thanks

There are a bunch on eBay for big prices, even some originals, just search for "1961 corvette package tray support":

Zip lists them but says they are shipped from the manufacturer....if its the same as CCs then that could be a problem, worth a phone call:

      John,
I would try some of the other vendors, maybe their inventory has not run out yet, Zip, Corvette America, Paragon, Grossmuellers, Ecklers, Mid America, West Coast Corvette, are a few that I can think of.

        John,

Is yours missing, or broken? If broken, it is repairable.

If missing, I would prefer originals over the reproductions. The repros are inherently too thick and sometimes cause more headaches, particularly the kick panels.

p.s. I just noticed on that Ebay cover that Frank found.........Careful, it's broken and it looks like someone used bondo to repair it. Right side of 2nd picture. They break at the bend next to the kick panel. Seller didn't disclose the obvious repair. It could be properly repaired, but his price should be less than half of the selling price for a broken part.

I recently repaired these original '59 kick panels and other pieces. Cracks are common. A resin/chopped mat stew is what I use to make my repairs.

Here are some before and afters.....

Found one. Thanks for your thoughts. Couldn't repair original as much of the portion that attached to the kick panel was missing.

People put too much pressure on that right hand flange where it meets the kick panel during removal and then "pop" the piece gets cracked. A popular restorer of C1s in my area pulls the right kick panel WITH the heater cover, never detaching the screw securing the two. Comes straight forward and out; I've seen him do it 2-3 times.....

              Frank,

I'm glad you mentioned that. I was talking to Mike Coletta(the popular restorer of mention) a few weeks ago and he told me yes that is how he does it. I told him that's a great idea. Then I said to him....."I'll bet that's how they did it in St Louis !" When I put this '59 together I'm going to use that method.

It really makes sense. For those familiar with the assembly or the cover and the kick panel, it's very difficult to attach the two together when installed separately. The right side of the cover has 2 holes for the screws, and the AIM calls out 2 flat nuts are used behind the kick panel.

They likely attached the 2 screws of the cover to the kick panel "on the bench" so they can hold the flatnuts behind the panel in place easier. Then the 2 piece assembly gets installed.

I can't wait to try it.

                What stripper are you using?

                  Captain Lee's Spra Strip

                  eg.....

It won't take the primer off though. Lacquer thinner and Scotchbrite pads are the preferred(only) method I have found to remove that.
