67' rear axle filler plug on rear end cover

I put on a Muskegon heavy duty rear end cover and I'm using my original rear axle filler plug (course thread). I noticed the plug gets very tight before it becomes fully seated or flush with the rear end cover; thus the cork gasket is useless. Has anyone else experienced this? I'm afraid to torque to spec because i don't want to strip the threads.

    Dave,
The 65-79 covers used a 3/4 npt plug, the first had a groove under the head and I've found O-rings there but most are fully threaded and no gasket is needed. The 63-4 covers used a machine thread plug that used a gasket and were more prone to leaking. You don't need to put a torque wrench on it, the tapered thread will tighten and seal with a firm hand tighten.
