rebuilt and sand blasted the differential case. Does the color remain natural or is it painted? Looking to have it judged at some point. Cast blast suggested but I think that's a no=no. Thanks. It's a '66.

Michael . Cast blast is fine if you are not going to be judged . The cases were not painted .The color varied from case to case some light grey some almost black . The pictures are of two rear ends . The dark one was cast in 67 the lighter one in 65. they came out of a trade school and were never in cars . Note the areas where the seams were ground off and the machined areas . I'm sure many of these had a nice "patina" of rust before they were delivered to the customer. I used CRC350 on my 65 but it really doesn't prevent rust very well, whereas Cast Blast will for quite a while. Just depends on what your goal is.- Top

If you are going to drive it and occasionally wash it both top and bottom, I'd go the cast blast route and take the very small deductiuon for finish. I drive my car(s) to all events and painted my '64 differential and half-shafts many years ago and it still looks great. I only took a minor deduct at chapter, regional, and national flight judging last year receiving top flights at all events even without any mileage points added. If the rest of the car is up to par, painting the differential and other components won't be a big deal.
One other route to go would be to soak everything with Pre-Lube 6. I did this on a '65 that I restored and it has lasted for a long time (6 years), but I have never washed the underside of the car. A picture is attached of the differential coated with Pre-Lube 6. I also coated the rest of the driveline components also.

Thanks for the replies. Never having had a car NCRS judged it looks like the best bet to leave it natural and just coat it with a protective lubricant. Not sure what gets deducted for what. This is a pretty original car that I have owned since '69 and knew it since new. Seems like an impossibility to have one perfect! The fuel tank is nice and original, a bit dirty but the original coating is mostly worn off. I can't find anybody who recoats them and don't want to go to aftermarket!- Top

When I build a diff, like a box or arms, I ask the owner how it is to be finished. Many cars that are driven are protection by some process. I blast, etch, POR15 base coat and use Seymours cast blast for a top coat. It holds up very well in all conditions and I doubt rust will ever be a concern. It will be judged as painted though. For the purists I use RPM and have some pictures of a recent diff I did using it. I came out great and the product has been tested, according to their supplied information, in salt water. You have to heat the surface to about 140-150* to get it to flow on but once it cools down the finish is as natural you will find and has a wax type feel to it. I'm very pleased with it. I have also used Fluid Film on bare iron, spray it on and let it soak in then buff it out.- Top
