    Gas door bezel.

Does anyone make, or has anyone made , a gasket for the Gas Door Bezel ?

I can't be the only one who doesn't feel right putting that on their brand new paint job , and or wondering why GM made gaskets for everything but that .

    Re: Gas door bezel.

Jim, Why would you need a gasket? I think the door is enough to cover the fuel cap area. and its not even a water tight area around the perimeter any way. That's why the rubber boot and drain hose. If you are rebuilding the door you could use some 3m strip chauk around the perimeter of the emblem and wipe the excess, The problem with this maybe that if water gets under the emblem and sits there it will damage it, and the zinc plating on the backing plate.

      Edward ,

I am just trying to put a softer buffer between the hard stainless ring and the paint job . Especially when you will be pushing down on it every time you close the gas door.

        Jim,

I can certainly understand your concern wanting a buffer between the ring and the gas lid. Being rather anal myself, when I shut my gas lid I bring the lid down until it touches the stainless ring then i push the nylon retainer ring on the lid in with my finger and gently close the lid. It's kind of like how I close my hood. Years ago I just brought the hood down to about 12" of close and then released it and let gravity take over. After the 4 year body off restoration I now bring the hood all the way down, place a towel on the hood over the hood latch and depress until it locks and then do the other side the same way...I know, I know. But, I do drive it...a lot!!

          Leif,

          Exactly !

One of the reasons I asked is because I noticed that even though GM never put anything between the body and the bumpers , someone makes and sells rubber spacers for that area.

Jim, I was thinking the gas door, not the bezel, sorry about that, There must be something you can make. like a thin piece of foam from a home depot maybe in the window and door weather stripping dept.

If you never remove the bezel how would you know or see any paint damage??

                Edward,

                No problem.

I know I can make something, though I was hoping for something ready made.

                Keith,

You are correct of course, but it would just bug me to damage my beautiful new paint job.

                  Jim,

Buy some of that liquid "Plasti Dip" stuff and put a thin coating on the inside area of the bezel where it makes contact with the painted area. It comes in several colors and provides a rubberized plastic coating.

                    Tracy,

You know what they say about great minds. In my case I barely eek by , but I thought of the same thing last night. I figured I would brush it on. To my surprise I found it also comes in a spray can. I haven't tried it yet, but it should make it easier to coat it evenly and catch the edge.

                    Thanks,

                    Jim

Well I don't know how much protection it will give , or as others have pointed out whether it even needs it , but it makes me feel better . Here is my bezel with it's new gasket. A nice even and thin layer of plastic coating !

Can I find great ways to waste time , or what !

                          Jim,
The key here is that it makes you feel better...and at the end of the day, that's all that matters...isnt't it?

Cool Jim..let us know how the final fit is. The coating looks pretty even, did you use the spray-on version?

                              Leif,

No it isn't , or at least hardly ever is . But I must admit it does feel good every once in a while !

                              Tracy,

Yes , I used the spray and as I figured, it makes a much more even finish then by brushing it on. As for fitment it looks fine , the coating is not very thick at all .
