    1967 Turn Signal Problem

    Hi All--

I have a problem with my turn signal system on my 1967 Coupe. When selected, sometimes the left turn signal will blink--perhaps one (1) out of every seven (7) times that I try to use them. When the turn signal doesn't properly flash, the indicator light on the dash comes on steady, as well as the front left amber turn signal--obviously it is hard to determine what the rear left indicator light is doing when I am driving. The right turn signal lights always work when activated. Any thoughts/suggestions as to the problem or what I should be checking/replacing?? Thanks in advance!

    Rob,
You may be lucky and just need to clean off the contacts on the turn signal switch. The unlucky part is the switch has heated up due to resistance and caused the plastic to soften and allowed the contact to regress.

If you are good with mechanisms you may be able to correct the situation. I'm only about a 50% success on that. Other option is a new switch. They can be an issue to obtain.

I had a similar issue with my turn signal switch as well. I have a 67 coupe and the brake light would go out periodically. I tried cleaning the contact inside the switch with mixed results. Sometimes would work sometime not. I finally bought a new switch from Lectric Limited. It fixed my problem and I also have the lane change feature to boot now. That never work before. They have limited stock.

Good scoop Michael--thank you! I will try Gene's suggestion, and yours will be my "fall back" plan!

Usually a sign of a bad ground on that side.

Could simply be a burned out bulb. If the rear bulb is burned out (you said you couldn't see it), then the turn signal won't flash. The filament may be touching occasionally and that's why the signal will flash 1 out of 7 times. The easiest and cheapest thing to check...try putting in a new bulb in the left rear and see what happens.

I love this Forum! Leif, thanks I will check bulb first; then the switch Gene discussed. Wayne, where would the bad ground be that you mentioned?? Sorry, I am not an electrical whiz; and I don't want to ask my wife for help (not worth the grief).

                Thanks,
                Rob

Ck for bad ground in that circuit for the t sig lamps.

Also put the hazard flashers on. This will bypass the turn signal switch and that way you can tell if the bulbs are working. My bet is the switch contacts.

                      Hi All--

First check of the system is completed. As recommended by Mr. Mike Cipolla, I engaged the hazard flashers--all lights front and back lights worked perfectly. So, do I assume the turn signal lamp flasher and light bulbs are functioning properly, and move on to trouble shooting the turn signal switch as suggested by Mr. Gene Manno and Mr. Mike Cipolla??? Thanks again to everyone who is providing assistance with regard to this issue!
