Pretty sure it has never been touched. You might have seen this 68 coupe years ago. Paul Borowski used to own it .

At least through 1967, all temp sending units were installed at the engine plants; I suspect that continued into 1968 and beyond.

        Hi John,
I've been operating with the idea that if the part is shown in the AIM it was installed in St.Louis.
The water temperature switch for the base 350/270 is shown in the 71 AIM with an item number and torque value.
UPC 12, Sheet A7, "Generator & Forward Lamp Wiring Harness, Generator Wiring".
So that's not always the case?
        Regards,
        Alan

Notice the orange paint on the valve springs in the photos that Terry posted.

Shown on the same page in the 1970 AIM for the base engine.

            Edit add:
The same page in the 1972 AIM shows the temperature sending unit installed by others. We can presume it was installed at the engine plant in 1972, at least for the base motor.

And I looked in 1968 & 1969 AIMS and there is no mention of the temperature sending switch. In fact the first 1968 drawing doesn't even have a lead int he wire harness for it, but that drawing was redrawn to include the connector and wire for it. We can presume from the 1968 AIM that the temperature sender was installed at the engine plant and delivered to St Louis as part of the engine assembly. Again this only applies to the base motor.

See my post number 14 in this thread for my seat of the pants evaluation, which now appears more correct than I thought when I made that post.

To illustrate the often asked question: "How did they not get orange paint on the LT1 rocker covers?" is the reason I scanned and posted those pictures years ago. I thank you for giving them to me. I expect a few people reading this thank you as well.

BTW: I still doubt it was TFP to paint the LT1 engines without rocker covers on them. The folks at Flint engine told me that they used "travel covers" that were removed after paint and the aluminum covers were then installed. It is obvious that those travel covers sometimes were not used or got blown off, but when we have to decide what is typical we have to believe (however foolish that belief might be) that the workers followed the assembly instructions at least most of the time. There are some examples where we know the assembly instructions are wrong or were not followed consistently, but there is no evidence of that in this case.
