    70 LT1 Engine Paint Overspray

    Hi All,

Getting ready to paint my LT1 engine (late production car CTK).

Is there any original overspray on the intake or exhaust manifolds?

Is the back of the water pump engine color or not painted? Same goes for behind the exhaust manifolds, bare or painted?

    Thanks,
    Dave

Dave, the intake manifold has some dull silver on the area of the head and intake where the two center intake bolts are on each side, there will be some silver on the intake at this area to. the exhaust manifolds were not on so there will be orange on the area behind. the water pump back side may have some slight overspray only. as the pump was on the car.

These pictures show how the CTK engine was masked for the exhaust manifolds. Looks like a template covered the mounting area's as well as a stripe down the middle, connecting all three pads. This enginewas washed with soap and water, so you can see how much paint was used. Maybe a light coat at that!

        Gary,

The driver's side of that block sure appears to have a lot more paint on it than the passenger's side.
And the line between the exhaust ports is very interesting!

Anyone ever get a photo of the mask used to do that, Terry? I assume it was some sort of template that fit into the exhaust and spark plug holes to cover them up.

Interesting , the temp sending unit was installed before paint.

                  Dave,
I'll give you a dollar and buy you a cup of coffee if you paint the motor just like Bosselman's pics.

If you look at Terry's pics and where the mask likely lay, I don't think the sender could have been in place at the time of painting.

I am not aware of any photos of that mask. I have real photos (fromt he days before digital) of a crate engine of unknown heritage with similar masks. While the heritage of that engine is unknown, the masks are decidedly similar to what you see in both of our pictures. I am pretty sure that crate small block was from sometime in the 1960s, and I think early 1960s at that. Flint used similar masks for a long time. I wouldn't be surprised that there are similar masks for fat motors as well.

I too assUme that the mask was held in place by plug shapes that fit into the spark plug and temperature sending holes. There was a triangular shaped mask that fit into the holes for the engine mounts that I expect was held in place by similar means.

Sorry to hit a nerve Patrick. image.jpgimage.jpg eason I asked is I have enclosed two pictures of the sending unit from my 68 SB. Sure looks like block was painted with unit installed.

No nerve hit at all. I'm just wondering why you you made that observation in the photos when I couldn't see any paint on the sending unit pictured.

I was just noting that by the way I view the photos, with a blank stripe running right over top of the sending unit, the odds of it getting paint were small. In addition, I am not sure why they would install a sending unit but none of the other screw-in ancillaries?

I agree Patrick. When I saw the template run over where it's located I went and looked at the sending unit. I took two closer pictures this time ,you can clearly see the Orange paint on one side and nothing on the other. image.jpgimage.jpg

Such details sometimes changed from year to year, or even within a model year. Witness the heater hose fitting in the water pump.
Jeff can you state that no one "touched up" your 1968 engine in its life following assembly at Flint?
