measure width of bolt head, say 9/19" wide, then open the jaws on your vice to 9/16 plus another 1/8" or so, place canister over jaws of vice with bolt head centered between vice jaws, then take a brass headed hammer, and strike the threaded end of the canister bolt. it'll pop right thru the canister. i assume you are referring to the seal between the bolt and the canister, which in my experience, is a flat washer with brass plating. no rubber seals to my knowledge. mike

Mike . I thought it had a 50 year old chunk of what was rubber at one time . If not do you think it needs to come apart ?

they rarely leak.if not leaking, let be. only reason i've removed the bolts is because the bolts can be modified to substitute for c-1 spare tire hold down bolts.mike

Long Island Corvette Supply (LICS) sells a rebuild kit for this canister - their p/n 38-11C. Look at this part number in their catalog for a picture on how this is assembled. The LICS rebuild kit is $13. Seems a little pricey, so I rebuilt my canister by replacing the copper washer and retainer clip. The bolt comes out if you hit it lightly with a hammer. In doing so, you will probably ruin the retainer clip.

The seal is a copper washer under the head of the bolt.

The retainer clip is a internal tooth washer. If you need some, let me know. I have about 98 of them left after I rebuilt my canister. You install this clip by pushing it down the bolt with a section of electrical conduit.

I have had a few cannisters restored a couple years ago, and they come back with a snap ring retaining the bolt. I like the internal tooth washer better.
