Does anyone know the wall thickness for an original 1965 oil filter canister? I suspect the canister I have is a reproduction. It leaks oil down the sides when torqued to 25ft lbs. Wall thickness on this one is 0.102 in.

Re: 65 oil filter canister
Wayne, thanks for the reply. I measured mine again several times with an electronic digital caliper and got between 0.102 and 0.107. Since my measurements are slightly greater than yours and your canister is original then I guess mine is too.- Top

Repos aren't always thinner material. They could also be made from thicker material.- Top

Re: 65 oil filter canister
My understanding, after discussing this with one of the major vendors who reproduce the canisters, is that no one has a dye capable of drawing the heavy gauge steel used in the original GM units. They said that the GM dyes are no longer in existence. Therefore, it makes sense that if anyone has an original, it is better to have it restored than to buy a repro. Wish I would have known this sooner. I still alternate between my repro and original on every other oil change, but I'd rather use the original as it seems to seal better and I like the sense of security that the more substantial canister gives me against road debris.

Re: 65 oil filter canister
I was a supervisor in the AC department that made the canisters in 1960. My recollection is that they were made on a 600 ton transfer press utilizing about 6 draw dies to accomplish the deep draw from blanks that were made from steel about 1/8th inch thick. They were then automatically transferred to a lathe that machined the mounting surface. they then went through a washer followed by an electrostatic paint process. The mounting hardware was then installed followed by silk screening. The filter was then installed, the assembly packed in cardboard half cartons, placed on a pallet, top cover installed and shipped to the engine plant. After 55 years some of the details are blurred!! The plant ( and AC ) are long gone.- Top
