1956 Corvette Ignition Shielding figure eight coil bracket

    Hi all,

I have noticed that the reproduction shielding for a 1956 Corvette non-fuel injection engine that I have seen does not use a figure eight bracket for the distributor and coil as pictured in the drawing below:

    Now what?

Which version am I supposed to use?

    Thanks!

Not positive, but if yours is the '57 AIM, as the '56 AIM does not technically exist, maybe it was different from what is shown in your '57 model year AIM page above.

Could you use the later type that attaches to the intake manifold? Is your distributor stock and does it include a vacuum advance. Is it the 1110891 tower tall base like later years?

The present 56-57 JG seems pretty clear on this; "the coil mounting on carbureted engines is to the right of the distributor with a special "figure-8" clamp support"

Thanks Mike, I haven't made it out to the shop library yet.

I looked up Paragon and others. https://www.paragoncorvette.com/sear...m=coil+bracket
For some reason, they supply the later "922" '58-'62 coil bracket for non-FI '56-'57.

        Lists for $27.

Paragon states to be "correct" for '56-'57, use their "966" bracket.
Yikes! $85 list price. -10% NCRS discount, still a bit pricey. Maybe that's why they opt for the cheaper one in their kits.

          Hi Rich and Mike,

          I have the 1110879 distributor

Ok, so if I use the figure 8 bracket (966).....like I used on my 2x4 passenger car engine, the shielding supplied with the (922) bracket will install exactly the same, correct?

If so, that will be another item checked off the list. Jeeze, next up!

          Thank you!

          John

PS.....the 966 bracket is ok, but it moves *everything* around slightly if you have to re-adjust the timing.

I would think one would loosen up the coil bracket during timing then, once timing is set, you could move the coil into position and tighten it, if that were possible. My thought is that you must position the coil bracket properly in order for the shielding to fit over and attach to it.

Correct Stu. Usually the figure 8 bracket doesn't have to be moved (nudged) much unless timing is way off. Usually the bracket has to be adjusted only for the shielding install. Since timing adjustment is usually only a degree or two I loosen and adjust the figure 8 bracket after adjusting the timing. John, I assume you have a 2X4 engine. Steve

                Hi Stu and Steven,

In my experience, without the shielding, the figure eight bracket simply adds an extra hassle factor to get it positioned correctly, just below the ID plate rivets and absolutely even all the way around the distributor without it being slightly cocked.....I want it on perfectly!

....and I do intially static time the engine, crank damper mark/point light!

Yes Steven, it is a 2x4 motor.

                Thank you!
