65 hinges

What finish did the 65 hinges have when installed, i.e. prior to body color? Mine are black in the areas where there is no body color. My 65 Judging Guide says there should be traces of zinc-chromate primer (yellow-green in color) visible.

Bill,
With the zinc-chromate primer, red oxide primer, gray primer and finish color there could be any and or all on the hinges. Generally the forward side of the hinge (area that paint will not get to) are zinc-chromate primer green on AO Smith cars for sure. Keep in mind the doors were painted with the door assembled to the body. If you have a St Louis car that plant had capability of black finish. AO Smith did not. Did all cars built at St Louis get everything (hinges too) mounted to the body coated black? I can't say a definite yes or no.

I will say this. Most cars in the flight row restore this area incorrectly, as in over restored having too much paint and paint were it shouldn't be.

Bill . On my STL. built 65 the unpainted part of the hinge is black .

Mine is a St Louis car and the black looks original in all the areas of the door hinge where the body color did not reach.
