What do you rebuilders use to identify the lifters to ensure they get returned to their respective bores ? (Assume just R & R of cam bearings). Maybe a rectangular plastic "thingy" with two rows of 8 holes with the front of the engine indicated ?

Re: Temporary holder for valve lifters during cam R & R ?
I suppose that there are a number of things that can be bought and used for this job. In the early days (no $ for extras) I simply used empty egg cartons for holding the lifters and rockers. Poked small hoes in the carton cover to hold the corresponding push rods. Numbered them using a black marker pen.
You should always use new lifters on a new cam. I have successfully used new racing lifters (anti-pump-up) on a good used cam without issues. Always use plenty of moly break-in lube on the wear and mating surfaces.

Wayne - I suspect the aftermarket makes something for temporarily holding the lifters but in a pinch, you could use an egg carton and mark up the individual sections for #1 - I, #1 - E. Not the sturdiest container but it would work. Of course, you're going to need more than one carton ;-).Mike T. - Prescott AZ.- Top

...about a two foot long section of 2 x 4 or 2 x 6 with appropriate diameter holes about an inch into the material with appropriate marking to indicate bore number or just the front of the engine ... just don't accidently tip it over.

Small zip-loc bags work well. One lifter per bag. You can write which cyl and I or E on the outside of the bag.
