I should have included this question with my earlier post. I'm going thru a 1962 340HP I purchase a few years ago. Thanks to the feedback from the forum on a earlier question, I found my carrier was out of a 1956 but has been modified/updated with new internals to include the addition of a positive traction unit. Can someone tell me (this differential does not have the 'C' washers/clamp that release the axles) if a crush sleeve is used to pre-load the ring and pinion?? I don't have it apart yet and don't plan on replacing the gears because of how they look and track. I do plan to install a new pinion seal and wondering if I should also replace the crush sleeve if on exist. I can see the crush sleeve in my service guide for those using 'C' washer but it doesn't show for those having the flange that hold the axles in. Sorry for all these words. I appreciate your feedback. Thanks again - Chuck (58064)

Re: 1962 Differential Carrier
Yes, to properly replace the seal you need to replace the crush sleeve. There is an alternative method to reuse the crush sleeve by adding a thin shim so that you crush the sleeve additionally, but if you've got it apart you may as well simply use a new sleeve. You will know what type of brg preload is used when you take it apart. The crush sleeve has an obvious bulge where the crush occurs, a brg that is preloaded using a solid sleeve and shims will have a straight sleeve and shims. Keep in mind that the presence of shims between the inner races is not an assurance that it is a non crush sleeve install. It could have had the shim added as mentioned earlier to reuse the crush sleeve. If I was going to the trouble of taking it apart I would replace the bearings. Replacement of the bearings does not require resetting of pinion depth, although it never hurts to take a pattern check afterwards just to make sure.

Re: 1962 Differential Carrier
To pull the axles there are 4 bolts you remove, backside of back plate, a slide hammer easily pulls the axles out.....you see the Orings on the bearing that seal into the housing.....if stuck on the road in a pinch, you can mount the tire on the hub sans drum and leave lugs loose and pull on the rim a couple of times....Attached FilesDino Lanno- Top

Re: 1962 Differential Carrier
Terry, Dino
Thanks for getting back with me. Terry, my axles came out as Dino has described - no "C" clips. My carrier, based on the casting number was identified as 1956 (I think by Duke) on one of my earlier post. Dino, I'm getting familiar with this box I'm using to communicate with and forget sometimes how useful it can be (early, early baby boomer !!) Thanks again - Chuck (58064)- Top
