At the time the 1 Millionth was built John Amgwert's published numbers in The Restorer questioned Chevrolet's numbers based in part on the two "extra" 1965s that were found exceeding Chevrolet's published production numbers. John questioned whether Chevrolet took those two units into account when totaling the production. As I remember he presented numbers to indicate that they did not. There is also an issue of some 4000 missing VIN numbers in one of the later C3 years (that is later than 1972). I do not recall if those missing VINs became a factor in his calculations or not.
I always figured if they made it they were entitled to call it whatever they wanted. In the end what does it matter if the 1 millionth was really the 1,000,002 unit. Now, since the sinkhole, it would seem to matter even less.
