    Restorer stories

In the last Issue of Restorer Vinnie was kind enough to publish my story about my '64. In the story I mentioned being able to trace ownership back 3 owners but no further. A couple of weeks after the issue came out I received an e-mail from Norris Wallace (NCRS 6139) telling me he might be able to shed some additional light on the car's other owners. After telling him what I knew about the 2 Georgia owners and sending him a photo taken the day the car was sold to one of them, he gave me a name and phone number for Ronnie Lawrence. I called and explained the situation to Ronnie and sent the photos I have. He identified everyone in the photos (including himself) and explained that the seller at that time was Miller Garrett, who had the '64 and a '65 coupe. Lawrence bought the '65 and the '64 was sold to a previous owner of my car who was known to me. I then contacted Mr. Garrett who was able to tell me who he bought the car from (Randy Dillon of Tucker, GA.) which closed the loop. I have thanked everyone by e-mail and phone and I thank them again here. It probably isn't often that a car's full ownership history is know so I feel very fortunate.

In the last issue of Restorer there was a story about a Corvette originally purchased by USAF 1st Lt. Tom Platt. Tom survived a Vietnam tour as an F-105 pilot and retired as a Lt. Col. One hundred of those missions were into "Route Package 6", the Hanoi-Hai Phoung area of North Vietnam, whose air defenses were the heaviest in history. Tom passed away a couple of years ago. RIP.

      Hi Doug,
That's very nice that you were able to complete your car's history. I'm sure you're pleased!
I think it's interesting that in the 50s and 60s, and to some extent the 70s, we thought Corvettes were unusual and special enough that people remember particular cars they or their friends/acquaintances had, and many times, even what happened to them.
      Regards,
      Alan

Before the internet I would bet most Corvettes and other cars for that matter, were sold locally, so they tended to stay in one general area. Mine changed hands 5 times between Atlanta and Macon, GA in the 1980s. It originally went from NY to Atlanta because the brother-in-law in Atlanta was going to perform some restoration work for the original NY owner. When it left GA it was an Ebay sale in the early 1990s. But even back in those days I think Corvette owners knew other Corvette owners, just like they do now.
