Re: C1 windshield glass thickness
No particular interest except I'm about to put mine back together with a replacement glass and curious if it's thick enough to fit the seal properly. I don't have the original (broken in a 1964 accident) and can't get to the new replacement yet to measure. The circa 1965 replacement measures .290 near the center of the top edge, all I can access right now. Thanks for all the input, I now have at least a ballpark number to look for on the new glass.- Top

Not sure if you have the repair doc I wrote so I attached it below. Also HTML files HERE.
Last year around this time Tom and I were battling rubber wrinkles and we teamed up with the vendor, CRC who makes them.
Prior to a year ago, there were 2 sizes or the rubber...... There was a very tight version which they sold for years and they got complaints from people that were breaking glass at the outer curves as it was too tight. Then they made a new longer version to avoid breakage, but it was way too long, 8" too long, and although people were no longer breaking glass, it left ugly wrinkles on the dash inner curved areas.
So there was Papa Bearand Mama Bear
. (sorry, I get a little silly in the early morning hours I've been up since 4am in the shop)
But we needed a Baby Bear version
.
So Tom and I tag-teamed Mike at Corvette Rubber(the supplier), and he was a great vendor to work with. He made a new shorter, in between Papa and Mama bear size rubber seal and came up with the perfect offspring........A new Baby Bear size. He sent Tom and I each test trial samples and it was a perfect fit. We both had glass waiting and the result was fine.
Around that time if you bought the CRC seal or if bought sometime before, it may be the tight or the loose rubber. If you bought it after that it's probably okay.
here's the full history.....

Re: C1 windshield glass thickness
Thanks, Rich,
I do have your rebuilding article, as usual very well done. I believe my new glass is from Auto City. I got it a few years ago at a swap meet and put it away along with the old replacement which is delaminating near the edges.
I also recall the thread concerning the gasket length as I followed it as you developed the new dimensions. My gasket is much older (I have purchased parts over the years as I identified the need, not AS I needed the parts), so I may have to get one of the new ones. Have to check the one I have.
What gasket-to-glass sealer do you use? I believe Mike McCagh mentioned a urethane sealer some time back, but I'll have to dig through my notes to find it. Thanks again for all the help you provide to us part time restorers.- Top

Re: C1 windshield glass thickness
If the glass seal is really old don't use it. It'll be too tight and may break at the lower corner joints.....it happened to me with a NOS rubber seal once. 3 days later it split at the butt joint. Not happy.
For the sealer, probably similar to Mikey's product...... I use a NAPA product, but in a small hand-size tube which is easier to use than a big gun cartridge.
NAPA 4121
Good Luck,

Re: C1 windshield glass thickness
You don't need much. I've done half a dozen windshields with one tube. Use it sparingly and accurately. Too much makes a awful mess and can cause the rubber to slip off of the glass.
