    C1 windshield glass thickness

What is the correct thickness of original 1956-62 windshield glass? Thanks for any info.

Good question, there are a couple of us trying to determine this. What is your interest in this ?

When I replaced the glass in my 58 I measured the thickness of the original glass at several points. The original glass varied between 0.230 and 0.240. The replacement glass would consistently measure 0.010" less then the original at the same points.

That seems the norm for aftermarket windshields and according to the people I have talked to, that little bit will not be a factor. I just have to ask if you are sure your windshield in your 58 was original? And how long ago was this and do you know where you got the replacement?.

The aftermarket windshield I pulled out of my 62 is measuring between .250 and .260. Sue wish someone could measure a known original!

                    Terry,

I'm pretty confident that the windshield I removed from my 58 was an original. There was no evidence of tampering or previous dissassembly of the windshield frame when I took it apart. I had to replace it as it had a hammer dropped on it several years back. The replacement came from Auto City Classic and I believe it was made in mexico.

Here are some pictures I took of it. Date code, thickness measurements at a couple different points (orig is the thicker measurement) and a shot comparing a section side by side. This was all done about 1 year ago.

This is a picture of the label that was on the new one. Shows it is metric and most likely fabricated in a spanish speaking country.......

Ignore the broken glass. The first windshield I got in was damaged in transit. Looked like someone dropped the shipping box AND pallet from a 10 foot height. Auto City replaced it immediately and used a different carrier for the second one which arrived intact.

Terry, Today I'll get a call with the Auto City Glass thickness from the friend I told you about. He called last night after I left him a message earlier in the day, but too late for him to get it when he called.

For reference, over the years it appeared that replacement glass in the past was thicker than today's replacement glass.

Tom, FYI your last photo is missing.

Since your 58 has the LOF and XN(It appears), X is after Feb 1958, N is 1958. I'd say it's the original.

I got a thinkness for original LOF 1955 glass just now from a phonecall.......It's 0.277" thick. Maybe the earlier cars were spec'd a bit thicker due to the different frame.

                            Tom, Rich
I just picked up a Pilkington made glass for my 62, tinted and it measures between ,230 and .238, this with a good caliper, measured my old windshield and it was actually between .260 and .270. Pilkington is a division of LOF, I talked to them and they said "good luck finding one the original thickness". They also told me that a lot of the early replacements were thicker than the original. Under $200 and no shipping charges thru my local glass dealer.

May you be gentle and loving to that melted pile of sand and I hope you're successful in it's new endeavor inside that old windshield frame.

Remember to protect and caress those curves and it'll be wonderful.
