OK, we know that the shifter mounting (manual trans shifters) changed during the 66 model year. Early 66 cars had the shifter mounted to the trans as 65 cars did. Later 66 cars had the shifter mounted to a bracket that was mounted to the frame. My question is: when did this change occur. I am looking for roughly a date or VIN where the change occurred?Inquiring minds...

Re: 66 shifter mounting
I bought my 1966 roadster in 1979. The engine was not original but the 4-speed Muncie was original as it had the matching partial VIN stamped on it. The body build date on the data plate under the dash is "F24" (Feb. 24, 1966). Many other parts were also dated February 1966. The shifter was attached to the 3888263 bracket as shown in the 1966 AIM (UPC 6, sheet B6).

Re: 66 shifter mounting
The shifter mounting change happened gradually. very early cars have the '65 carry over shifter bracket on the transmission, without holes in the frame for a bracket. Then, the frame changed and holes were added for a bracket, yet the shifter was still mounted to the transmission. after that, the '65 type shifter bracket was phased out and the frame mounted bracket introduced. (There is a window of confusion, where the shifters mounted to the transmission, and the frame has holes for a bracket.) I have some notes with observations of different cars at the shop. Will try to post tomorrow.
Hope this helps,
